Hey- I know the cost is a huge variable, but the damage to the economy and the public health will be far more devastating if we don't fix these issues. Conservatives would argue that the primary duty of the federal gov't is to ensure our safety. Even if I accepted their narrow point of view, I still consider healthcare as vital to national security and safety every bit as much as the tanks, missles, etc. If we aren't healthy we can't defend ourselves. Cut 1/2 the waste, inefficiency and fraud in the gov't and we'd be "in the black" so fast no one would even question the need for national healthcare, and we'd probably have "leftover" revenue to either provide more services, or to provide real, meaningful tax relief. Getting a ck for a few hundred dollars doesn't do one much good...
